The Peru national team is no joke, they clashed against Ecuador in Group B's second match day and started the first minutes on fire. After a Paolo Guerrero well placed shot deviated by the Ecuadorian goalkeeper, playmaker Christian Cueva scored an absolute turn around beauty to give Peru their first goal of the night. It was official, after shaking up the first match, many Copa America teams were finally feeling confident and playing at a top level. University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale Arizona was nearly packed for this match.
They didn't let Ecuador breathe one bit, on the 12th minute Edison Flores scored another turn around shot and placed the ball to the goalkeeper's far low post. The overwhelmingly fast pace they started playing, was destined to get slower as time passed by. Peru needed to win this match but Ecuador wasn't just going to sit back and let them keep scoring goals. On the 39th minute Antonio Valencia found Enner with a cross form the right, the Hammers' forward killed the ball with his chest and scored the goal to pull one back for Ecuador before half time. The match was far from being over.
Already on the second half and right off the locker room, Ecuador equalized the game with a lightning speed play where Jefferson Montero served the ball to Bolaños for the second Ecuadorian goal. It was an overly dramatic rest of the match, worthy of a Copa America level of competition from good old South America. For moment there, we experienced the best last half hour of any game in Copa America so far, it was as if there was no tomorrow for either side. So much tension, so much effort, so much dispute... But the chances were dangerously close for both sides, nothing else.
At the end, Ecuador managed to get back up after a marvelous start from Peru, they equalized a game that seemed completely lost during the first half an hour of the game. But this game was destined to give a point for each side, and leave things to be defined for the last fixture of Group B.
