Historically, the French in general have always been keen of living a life full of controversy. This is not just stereotype that was socially constructed by outsiders, this actually is a reality among the French community. When that controversy has translated into the football National Team, it has deeply affected the squad's performances in major tournaments. The best examples are the fight between players and manager back in 2010, or the 2014 hand ball which gave them the ticket to the World Cup.
This year, despite having the Benzema problem circling around them, somehow the players have managed to not let that affect them on the performance level. At east that's what full-back Patrice Evra is trying to sell us in this interview with Le Parisien. But we'll find out for sure this Wednesday when they face Albania if he is telling the truth or not, France is currently under the spotlight and the players are the only ones who can overcome this situation.
Evra is confident that outside topics won't affect the team: "The atmosphere in the group is healthier than in previous generations I was part of. I am not going to hide from that. The team needs more advice and guidance. There are fewer egos. That has always been the biggest strength of Didier Deschamps' teams. The team is the star.
"Some of the older players [of the past] are bitter and try to derail the younger players who could take their place. I have won too much in my life to be bitter. It is not about whether the young players surprise me, I want them to win me the Euros. I am putting the pressure on them. You have to be careful when you're young with what you say to the media. My job is to look after everyone and monitor them. I will tell the player who wins us the Euros that he is the best."
