Given that France wasn't able to play any actual competitive match throughout the whole qualification process for the Euros this summer, every French fan and players were absolutely bewildered about how France would actually do in the tournament. It's not like they didn't have a chance to play any matches during these four years, the things is that all the games they played, didn't have that competitive edge of a serious match like every other team in Europe had.
But last Friday at Saint Denis, France was able to finally measure the extent of their game level against Romania, the first serious rival of the last four years. The verdict is that they did perform at a good level, but they still need to get more used to playing with each other as players from several different clubs in Europe. Juventus full-back Patrice Evra, was very happy with the result despite this lack of games together.
Evra told the press after the game that: "France have not played in official matches for two years, there was a lot of apprehension. We were very shy in the first half. But we must still congratulate the Romanian team. I think there are many people who thought it was going to be easy, but the coach [Didier Deschamps] had warned us. I can do better. I was annoyed to create this penalty for my team-mates. But what interests me tonight is not my performance but really this state of mind.
"If you see my interviews before the competition starts, I said I want the fans to be proud of this team. And I think they can be proud tonight. This is the real Dimitri, the Dimi we love. To sign to West Ham and go to England made him good. He knows he is an important player for the team, but he also makes the efforts. If he continues to score in the top corner, it's great for France."
