Without thinking about the effect that leaving a player such as Antoine Griezmann out of the UEFA Player of the Year podium, Cristiano Ronaldo truly believes the best player at the Euros wasn't Antoine Griezmann. Usually in football, the awards for the best in every competition go to offensive players. There have been very few times when a defender has been recognized as the best in the tournament. His influence in the game has to be too obvious for it to be denied.
For Cristiano Ronaldo who is the most likely player to be named the best in Europe, the award from the last European Championship which Griezmann received should go to his compatriot Pepe. The Real Madrid defender was instrumental in Portugal's road tot he final and completely erased the chances created by the French side in the final. Cristiano Ronaldo may look biased, but he does make a strong point with Pepe.
Talking to UEFA.com, Ronaldo explained why he thinks Pepe should've won the award: "In my book, Pepe was extraordinary this year. It was possibly his best season. He was undoubtedly Portugal's best player and one of Real Madrid's best players in the Champions League. I'm delighted he was selected in the Team of the Tournament at the Euros – in my opinion Pepe was the best player at the Euros."
