The world champions' journey in the tournament ends early as Switzerland beat them in the last 16 round. It all came down to one penalty, and the weight of it was too much for Kylian Mbappe. Yann Sommer’s save turned out to be the crucial match-turning point for Switzerland who qualified for the quarter-finals rounds to take on Spain next.
Vladimir Petkovic's Switzerland were the underdogs of the match facing the star-studded roster of France, they first stunned with the 15th-minute opener by Haris Seferovic. Karim Benzema’s brace that came two minutes apart pulled France ahead after halftime, then Paul Pogba all but ensured their win with a 75th-minute goal. Little did they know Switzerland had not given up and leveled the game with goals by Seferovic and a 90th-minute effort by Mario Gavranovic. Switzerland then went 5 for 5 on penalties while Sommer denied Mbappe and they won their first major knockout tournament in 83 years.
