Girona secured a timely return 2-1 victory at home to Athletic Club

Before the game began at the Estadi Montilivi, the Catalan team had not triumphed in league play since September 9. They had to fight hard for all three points. Before the break, neither team produced much as Nico Williams was brilliantly denied by Paulo Gazzaniga. On a night with few opportunities, Girona took the lead right away after the restart when David Lopez rose highest to head in a free kick from Aleix Garcia.

Ivan Martin promptly extended the lead for the home team with his first goal for the team, and Gorka Guruzeta's deft volley late in the game gave the visitors a chance to get back into the game. Prior to the World Cup break, Girona will play a midweek league match against Elche while Athletic Club hosts Real Valladolid in Bilbao.
