All-time leading goal scorer for the Senior National side of Ghana, Asamoah Gyan says he did not become captain because he forced any member of the management team to hand him that role.
According to the 31-year-old who was named captain of the Black Stars in 2013, the skippership role was handed to him after management through their assessment of his performance realized he was capable of discharging those duties.
“I want him (Prince Tagoe) to understand that I never forced anyone to name me the captain of the Black Stars. I didn’t go to anyone, they decided to name me the captain in their own will. I believe they saw my capabilities and decided to name me as the Black Stars captain”. ,” he told Accra based Angel FM.
In an interview with SVTV AFRICA’s Evans Amewugah in January, Prince Tagoe claimed Gyan was never qualified to be lead the team. A factor he considered as being the prime reason why there were constant misunderstandings amongst teammates and management.
Asamoah Gyan joined Turkish club Kayserispor for €1.5 million euros annual deal following the expiration of his contract at Chinese side Shanghai SIPG in 2017.
