Lyon's fifth victory in the previous six league games put them one point ahead of Lille in fifth position and behind Marseille in third. The club in fourth place goes into qualification, while the top three automatically qualify for the Champions League the following season. Lyon beat Auxerre 3-1 on Sunday after the electrifying Georges Mikautadze scored one goal and played a part in setting up the second to help Lyon win all three points.
After going clear through and being fouled by goalie Donovan Leon, Mikautadze slotted away a penalty in the 54th minute. Rayan Cherki then finished with a tidy curl in the 62nd after right-back Saël Kumbedi and midfielder Corentin Tolisso worked well. In the eighty-fourth minute, experienced striker Alexandre Lacazette had an easy finish after the quick-footed Mikautadze pinged over a low cross from the left after Lassine Sinayoko of Auxerre had pulled one back.
