Newcastle United made a last-ditch attempt to sign Samu Aghehowa before the summer transfer window closed, but time was not on their side. The Magpies are aiming high in August. The Magpies contacted Porto in the closing days of the transfer window to inquire about the 21-year-old striker and to discuss a possible trade.
Despite weeks of growing interest, no official proposal was submitted before the deadline. Nick Woltemade of Stuttgart was ultimately chosen by Newcastle, who on August 30th finalized a £72 million (€85 million) agreement with him. Porto was in a solid position all the time. In July, they acquired all of Samu's rights, and he has an £85 million (€100 million) release clause. Samu remained in place, and Porto's position meant that nothing was going to happen so fast, even though Newcastle did advance late in the game. Furthermore, since the start of this season, the athlete has been dealing with an injury.
