The Colombian National team crashed against a wall at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey as they played against Peru in the second Copa America Centenario quarter final match. In an all-South American game which looked unbalanced in Colombia's favor, the Peruvian National team surprised everyone by taking Jose Pekerman's side until the very last stand from the spot. In quarter finals, a draw after 90 minutes took the game straight to penalties, no overtime at all.
During the first 45 minutes, Colombia commanded the game with pretty much all the chances against a very defensive Peruvian side. Skipper James Rodriguez had the best chance of the first half in his boots as he sent a right foot shot straight to the post. But apart from that and a lot of fouls committed by both sides, there wasn't really a lot of exciting moments to take from the game. The best thing that could happen to this match, was sending everyone to the locker rooms to take a break.
After half time, Colombia kept attempting to go on the attack but the well-organized Peru defense didn't allow a single ball to go through. At the very last minute, Colombia goalkeeper David Ospina was the one who saved his team as he made a fantastic effort to prevent a strong header to get in and avoided Peru's goal. The final whistle was sounded; this quarter final was about to be decided from the spot. Colombia stepped up to kick the first penalty, James didn't fail his shot.
During the shootout, both sides looked very confident and the first five shots got in without a problem. But on the sixth attempt, goalkeeper Ospina stopped Miguel Trauco's shot with his right foot as it was going through the middle. At the end, Carlos Cueva sent his penalty to the moon, and Colombia reached their first semifinal since the 2001 edition. Ospina was the big hero of the night, now Colombia expects the winner between Chile and Mexico.
