Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Matvei Safonov faces a significant spell on the sidelines after fracturing his left hand. The injury occurred following his heroic performance in Qatar on Wednesday, where the Russian shot-stopper saved four penalties in a shootout victory against Flamengo to secure silverware. PSG officially announced that Safonov’s condition will be re-evaluated in three to four weeks.
Consequently, Safonov misses the upcoming French Cup clash with fifth-tier Vendee Fontenay, leaving duties to either Lucas Chevalier or Renato Marin. This setback temporarily resolves the growing debate regarding PSG’s starting goalkeeper. Although the 26-year-old began the campaign as deputy, his match-winning display in Qatar and solid recent form effectively challenged Chevalier’s status.
Chevalier, signed for his distribution skills, had struggled with consistency before an ankle injury in November gave Safonov his chance. Now, the European champions must rely on the 24-year-old Chevalier or third-choice Marin while Safonov recovers from this blow.
