Real Valladolid and Villarreal continue to struggle in relegation

Alaves defeated Villarreal 1-0 at home to pull themselves out of the bottom three in the battle to escape relegation. Alaves' perseverance was what won them the game, although Manu Sanchez's good fortune allowed him to push home early. On the hour, Alaves dug deep to protect their slim advantage after goalkeeper Antonio Sivera was sent off for scything down Ayoze Perez just outside his box.

Villarreal failed to break down Alaves despite having a player advantage; Antonio Blanco's late red card meant the home team finished with nine men. In another match, after a 2-1 comeback victory over relegation-threatened Real Valladolid, struggling Valencia also managed to escape the relegation zone. After the restart, Giorgi Mamardashvili's mistake gave the visitors an equalizer, but Carlos Corberan's team won thanks to a tenacious goal by Umar Sadiq.
