Having lost two Champions League finals in three years against your most hated rival must be really hard, Diego Pablo Simeone didn't feel with the will power to keep going right after the defeat. During a conversation with the press after the final, he disclosed that he may not be willing to continue in the club. But after the bad moment has passed, he's had a lot of time to think about things and finally agreed to continue but with some big requests on the table.
The Atletico Madrid board had a meeting with the manager this Monday according to Diario AS, in which he exposed some of the weaknesses the team has. During the last five years he's been on board, the club has grown both professionally and economically thanks to his successful run. But up until this point, having just a competitive team doesn't seem to be enough for them to truly defeat the most potent teams in Europe like Barcelona or Real Madrid.
Simeone's defensive style is not like that because the Argentine likes playing that way, he does what he can with what he's given. But now that the club has the money and the prestige Simeone has given them, the coach thinks it's time to start spending big in players who will be a safe bet for the team. The €42 million they received from Jackson Martinez's transfer to Chinese football, is money they have already promised that will go to sign a world class striker. The clear option right now is none other than Uruguay striker Edinson Cavani, but they might go for someone even better.
Sporting director Miguel Angel Gil Marin has also promised to spend more money in other positions, players who can dribble and make a difference inside the club. But most of all, they have already promised that they won't sell any of their most valued players such as Antoine Griezmann or Koke, who are the base of this team for Simeone. They have already given the manager his first request by signing Argentine playmaker Nicolas Gaitan from Benfica. But there is still a lot to do, nothing that can't be done according to the board and the manager himself.
