Omar Alderete headed a header onto the crossbar just six minutes after the half, but Sunderland maintained the pressure and got off to a solid start in the second half. Although Sunderland's custodian may have done better, Cash's rasping long-range shot in the 67th minute put an end to Villa's goalless start to their league campaign.
