Before kickoff at Anfield, Arsenal, who are still vying for a second-place finish, presented Liverpool with a guard of honour. Their first-half defence was as hospitable. Cody Gakpo headed the opening goal before Luis Diaz scored a second, and Liverpool was cruising after two goals in 87 seconds.
However, Arsenal rallied after halftime, with Merino's diving header tying the score after Gabriel Martinelli had given Mikel Arteta's team hope. After Merino was sent off for a second bookable offence, Liverpool increased their pressure, but Arsenal held on and remained two points ahead of third-place Newcastle United after Andy Robertson had a chance to win in stoppage time disallowed for a foul. Early opportunities came on both ends, with Diaz firing directly at David Raya from a fantastic position and Bukayo Saka missing the mark.
