In their third match of the UEFA Champions League season, Sporting Clube de Portugal defeated Olympique de Marseille 2-1, with two second-half goals from replacements Geny Catamo and Alisson Santos. Rui Borges' club faced one of the best teams in Europe, leading Ligue 1 and riding a five-game winning run. Igor Paixão scored his goal on the third try, making it 1-0 with a looping shot into the net. Before the first half ended, Marseille got a huge blow with Emerson Palmieri’s second yellow card, reducing the team to 10 men.
A swift assault combination opened up space in the 70th minute. After a ball from Gonçalves to Catamo, the Mozambican, who was commemorating his 100th Sporting CP game, sprinted through on goal and scored the equalizer. In order to carry on the comeback, Fresneda was replaced by Alisson Santos. In the 86th minute, the Brazilian found a shot and, thanks to a deflection from a defender, had it loop into the net.
