Leaving very important players like Andrea Pirlo, Mario Balotelli and Sebastian Giovinco, hasn't been a walk in the park for Italian manager Antonio Conte. His decisions were made based on their respective present with their clubs, the level of competition of their leagues and their predisposition overall to attend the tournament. Conte has always had a really good record when it comes to select his players, that's why no one has really criticized him after finding out that Pirlo wasn't on the provisional list.
According to the manager himself, in his mind the Italian squad that will travel to France is already chosen, but he is going to wait until he reveals which seven players out of the 30 who are on camp right now will leave the squad. After this Tuesday's practice, Conte gave a media conference where he discussed who he will take and explained why he left out some players who may have made the cut at the end as well.
"In my head I know who to take to the European Championship. My ideas are very clear, and I'm very clear from this point of view. Doubts? I honestly have very few in my head, I already have a list of 24 or 25. Four or five strikers, that's one of the choices. I spoke to Andrea, I needed to hear from him and we sent people to the United States. However, we've made other choices and you have to accept them and deal with the consequences. Nothing was left to chance.
"We evaluated him and Giovinco, it's normal that if you choose to go and play there then you can pay the consequences in footballing terms. We evaluated them technically, we didn't leave anything to chance. Anyone who thinks otherwise is wrong, we went everywhere to have clear and precise ideas. I picked the 30 who I think will give me the most guarantees."
