During this summer in France, the European Championship will host the best national team in Europe to determine which is the best right now. There is no doubt that during this tournament, one of the most competitive sides on paper are hosts France, who have one of the most incredibly talented and young side of the tournament. Perhaps this side could even be compared to the generation of players from the late 90's and early 2000's. But in order to live up to the hype, they will have to at least reach the final at home.
Former France international, Marcel Desailly who was part of that late 90's generation, believes this side can win important trophies in the upcoming years. He believes that defeating Romania on the Euros opener next Friday will be key to build confidence and start believing they are capable of winning the tournament in front o their own crowd. Desailly is already eager for the contest to start, he will be cheering for his compatriots.
Talking to Omnisport, the former French international expects France to perform very well at the Euros: "I'm curious to see how Didier will set up his tactics, his offensive structure, how they are going to cope with the pressure that they must have on their shoulders being the host of this Euros. Lots of questions will be answered in the first game. I love Romania, but come on, when you look at our squad you have the potential of saying we can make it, we can win if we start well. If all the players play at their level we are supposed to pass this first obstacle," he said of Friday's opening game in Paris.
"If you cannot beat Romania at home with the squad that you have, it's finished, stay at home. If you cannot beat Albania in the second game, same thing, the shop is closed and we go home. So it's more connected to how they are going to build up this confidence. Towards any team, we respect them... you have to say that. But the truth is France needs to build up towards the [occasion], not against the opponent."
