European Championship 2016: Iceland vs Hungary preview

After becoming a brand new country in the European Championship with a participation on the final stage, Iceland will attempt to keep making history as they clash against Hungary. During their first match against Portugal, they managed to frustrate Cristiano Ronaldo and got their first ever point i this tournament. A truly historic moment for a country with a 330.000 inhabitant population, this comes as a feat worthy of legend.

They have Hungary in front of them this time, and judging on how well they did against Portugal, one can expect they could do better against the Easter European country. Manager Lagerback expects a tough match, he told the press that:  "The Hungary team, they developed through the qualification [campaign] and the play-off [against Norway], how they played some friendlies - I think they have developed their way of playing.

"Even though Austria is a good team, I don't think it was a big surprise. There are such small margins when you come to these championships. You can [progress] from a group of death as we did with Sweden once but you can go out also. We're far from that yet. We haven't started climbing any volcanoes yet. We have to keep our feet on the ground and do a good job against Hungary, otherwise we will lose that match."

Talking to DPA, manager Bernd Storck remembered the old times when Hungary were considered one of the world's best teams back in the 1954 World Cup when they defeated England 6-3 and reached the final that year: "The great successes of the past are still deeply rooted in the [collective] consciousness, which can be bad for players who already have a lot expected of them."

He also talked about the Hungarian football struggle at the club level: "The clubs play almost no role internationally. They usually do not even manage to reach the group stage of the Europa League, let alone the Champions League. After the European Championship is qualifying for the World Cup in Russia. Since we want to play a good role again [internationally], the participation here should not be a one-off ... [it is] a huge challenge to permanently bring Hungarian football out of the woodwork."

Possible lineups:

Iceland starting lineup (4-4-2 formation): Halldorsson; Saevarsson, R. Sigurdsson, Arnason, Skulason; Gudmundsson, Gunnarsson, G. Sigurdsson, Bjarnason; Sigborsson, Bodvarsson.

Hungary starting lineup (4-1-4-1 formation): Kiraly; Fiola, Guzmics, Lang, Kadar; Gera; Nemeth, Nagy, Kleinheisler, Dzsudzsak; Szalai.
