Lorenzo Insigne makes stunning switch from Napoli to Toronto FC

Lorenzo Insigne has caused a stir in European football by committing to join Toronto FC in Canada next summer. The 30-year-old forward, who helped Italy win the European Championship in June, has agreed to a four-year contract worth an estimated £11 million per year, making him the highest-paid player in MLS history.

After talks over a contract extension stagnated because the club wanted him to take a pay cut, Insigne's time at Napoli appeared to be coming to an end. Several European clubs, most notably Tottenham Hotspur, were linked with signing Insigne, but after numerous rumors suggesting a move to Major League Soccer, Toronto FC confirmed the agreement on Saturday. Indeed, Napoli fans will be disappointed to see Insigne depart, since he spent his entire professional career with the club, with just brief loan periods at Cavese, Foggia, and Pescara.
