Even if he is considered by most people as a full blown striker, England skipper Wayne Rooney is so much more than just a striker. His support to all midfielders, long passing abilities and field vision when he's in the middle of the field, give him the chance to become more influential in many more aspects of the game for England than just scoring goals. If manager Roy Hodgson is smart enough, he will take more advantage of Rooney's range as a player and won't waste his talents in midfield.
According to Arsenal legend Ray Parlour, Hodgson has already seen this and he will smartly use Rooney behind strikers such as Harry Kane and Jamie Vardy. With this approach, England will have huge depth during the Euros and the goals will come in large numbers. Rooney will do a great pair with Dele Alli, another playmaker who will also become a revelation for this tournament for sure. Talking to Omnisport, Parlour gave his assessment about Rooney's range.
"I think we will definitely score goals with the forwards we've got. Dele Alli just behind the front probably and Wayne Rooney's going to play a big part as well. Wayne Rooney's a great player, there's no doubt. On his day he can change games, so let's hope he has a really good tournament. I think he'll play in the three behind Harry Kane. It won't be left or right. I'm sure Roy Hodgson will put him, as skipper, in a position where he thinks he can really contribute to the team."
Parlour also justified Roy Hodgson's choice of preferring Jack Wilshere over Danny Drinkwater: "Jack's always done brilliant when he's had an England shirt on. Roy's quite a loyal man and Wilshere got him into the finals. Jack can be a match-winner. You want people who can go past players and create chances - I'm sure Jack can do that."
