The whole deal with Iker Casillas is a delicate situation, the former Real Madrid goalkeeper is having a really hard time taking on the substitute role with the Spanish national team. He met with manager Julen Lopetegui last week before the call-up list was revealed a day after, in that meeting the coach told him the main goalkeeper will be David de Gea from now on. Casillas truly believes he still has what it takes to be Spain's starter, that is why he declined Lopetegui's offer to turn him into a mentor for De Gea.
This information wasn't supposed to be revealed, but this Monday Sergio Ramos gave the scoop without realizing what he had done. He told the press that: "Everyone is surprised when such a historic and emblematic player for the Spanish and global football is absent. It's a new era, a new era with a radical change. Obviously, it's bizarre without seeing Iker but all opinions are respectable and it is a decision for both the player and the new coach.
"I do not know [what will happen] but the first contact [with the coach] was very good. We must be patient. Despite these changes of players it is practically the group we had before. We have lived together, and now we need to apply the ideas of the coach."
