Meanwhile, Brazilian giants Flamengo announced the signing of the 30-year-old midfielder. Saúl has inked a deal with the Carioca side that will keep him at the club until December 2028. He will don the number 8 jersey at his new team.
During his time at Atlético, Saúl was a key figure under Diego Simeone’s reign. In the 2021/22 season, he spent a loan spell at Chelsea, where he lifted the FIFA Club World Cup before returning to Atlético Madrid. Last July, he was loaned out again, this time to Sevilla.
At Flamengo, Saúl will be reunited with his former Atlético teammate Filipe Luís. The Spanish midfielder shared the pitch with the Brazilian defender for four seasons, during which they won two UEFA Europa League titles (2011/12 and 2017/18), the UEFA Super Cup (2012), and the Copa del Rey (2012/13) together.
