Switzerland beats defending champions Italy to move to next round

Italy was soundly defeated 2-0 by Switzerland in their last-16 match in Berlin, sending them out of the 2024 European Championship. Luciano Spalletti's side appeared to be a ghost of the team that had triumphed in 2021, three years after they had lifted the trophy at Wembley.

Remo Freuler and Ruben Vargas each scored a goal in the second half to give Switzerland the win. Murat Yakin's team took full advantage of Italy's indolence to set up a last-eight matchup with either England or Slovakia. Italy was confined within their half by Switzerland's early ball dominance. The first goal came after thirty-seven minutes. Freuler hammered the goal in at the near post, sending an uproar through the crowd. Just 27 seconds into the second half, Italy was outplayed again Vargas gained control on the outside of the box. With the opposition standing off him, he took aim and blasted an unstoppable effort spinning past Donnarumma's reach and into the top corner. In the end, Switzerland continued its march, and the holders left the competition with minimal opposition.
