Sydney FC have signed former Serie A midfielder Leo Sena

Sena has joined the Sky Blues on a two-year deal for the 2024-25 season, arriving from Brazilian club Agua Santa. At 28, the defensive midfielder boasts a distinguished career, having made a notable impact in European football. His journey began with a $2 million transfer to Italian Serie A side Spezia in 2020 after a successful loan from Atletico Mineiro. In Italy’s top league, he faced off against elite teams like Juventus, Inter Milan, and Lazio, and was the second most fouled player in Europe’s top five leagues, just behind England’s Jack Grealish.

Sena, originally from Sao Paulo, was poised for a $17 million move to Fiorentina, but the transfer was derailed by a resurgence of COVID-19. His career began with Goias in Brazil’s Serie B, where he made over 130 appearances, scored eight goals, and helped the team secure promotion to Serie A in 2018, followed by a solid 10th-place finish in their debut top-flight season.
