To anybody who doesn't remember the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, there was a two-match knock-out round between the Republic of Ireland and France that was decided by a Thierry Henry handball. This handball permitted the French get through to the final stage of the World Cup but during the tournament, the pressure was too much and off-the-field problems got them an early elimination. Divine intervention might have put everybody in their place, but the Irish never forget.
One of the players who was on that 2010 team, William Gallas, Spoke to L'Equipe about the upcoming round of 16 match between the French and the Irish. He believes that they will be out for blood because of that event six years ago, but he is confident that they can overcome any kind of problem the Republic of Ireland presents to them during next Sunday's game.
Gallas spoke freely about the incident: "This team will want revenge. I'm sure the coach will talk to them about 2009. The Irish will come to block, that is clear, with supporters that will set the mood. They have not forgotten. It'll be hot. From where I was, I did not see anything. Then when the game finished I saw him on the stadium screens. After the goal, I saw the Irish protest but I did not know why. When I scored, it was a relief. Especially with so little time left. Our qualifying campaign was not good and after this game there was a big relief. We wanted so much to qualify."
The Frenchman compared that same moment to the handball Uruguay striker Luis Suarez committed in order to prevent Ghana from eliminating them in the quarterfinals that same year: "There has been the same fury as when Luis Suarez prevented Ghana from scoring in the quarter-finals. Okay, there was a penalty but without this deliberate handball, there would have been a goal. It was an act of cheating."
