In penalty shootouts England defeats Switzerland to go to the semifinals

After losing the European Championship final on penalties three years prior, England's players showed immense confidence as they defeated Switzerland in a shootout to go to the Euro 2024 quarterfinals. After a 1-1 draw in extra time on Saturday, England won the penalty shootout 5-3 thanks to a brilliant goal from Trent Alexander-Arnold into the top corner. Another player who went up to score was Bukayo Saka, whose penalty kick was saved in 2021 denying England the chance to win the trophy.

In order to guarantee that extra time was used in the match, the 22-year-old also equalized the match earlier. Ivan Toney, Cole Palmer, and Jude Bellingham were the other shootout scorers. Manuel Akanji, who attempted Switzerland's first penalty kick, was denied by goalie Jordan Pickford, giving England the advantage in the penalty shootout.
