Russia salvages a point against a gray England

Roy Hodgson's final decision to play with Wayne Rooney and Harry Kane on the attack, seems like it wasn't the right one because they didn't seem to work against Russia this Saturday at Marseille's Velodrome. During the first half, the Three Lions weren't able to hit the right key on the attack and barely held their ground against the Russian side. The main problem was that neither Rooney nor Kane were able to find their sweet spot on the attack because they aren't used to playing off of each other. The first half got consumed with a goalless draw, Hodgson needed to make some adjustments.

But for the second half, the English manager held the same starting XI until the first goal came from a set piece. Around the 75th minute it was Eric Dier the one who scored a beautiful free-kick which gave England the edge, that's when Hodgson made the first modification to his tactical approach. Jack Wilshere got some minutes, but the Three Lions were still struggling against a high spirited Russian side that never gave up. But this result was more than enough for this first match because during big tournaments, everybody always gets overly nervous.

The final assessment, was that Roy Hodgson didn't seem to trust other strikers such as Jamie Vardy or even Marcus Rashford. Using them during the last 20 minutes could've helped the English get some fresh legs and renewed speed on the attack. The manager will get a lot of backlash for not having the resolve to take out key players to improve the team's dynamic, this lack of decision making skills was the main reason why Russia tied the game at the end with a Glushakov header on the last minute. Tough luck and inept decision making for England.
