This Sunday, the Mexican National team had a date with history, they had a big chance to change the curse of it as they clashed against Uruguay. The Copa America Champions from the 2011 edition were one of the most experienced and dangerous teams, minus the incisive presence of Barcelona striker Luis Suarez who wasn't able to help his country due to a hamstring injury he suffered. The Mexican side looked very dangerous against any opponent, after they defeated Chile they grabbed a boost of confidence.
But the real test came this Sunday, today was the day when the Mexicans had a unique opportunity to prove that they have the level of world class teams such as Uruguay. They didn't disappoint, right from the very start on the third minute of the first half, skipper Andres Guardado sent a cross from the left side and struck defender Pereira's face, it was an own goal against Uruguay and the Mexicans started winning the game from the start. Things were going to get more difficult for the Uruguay team as midfielder Vecino was sent off after two yellow cards before half time.
During the second half, Uruguay was way better organized with ten players, they put things way more difficult for Mexico, the hardest test for manager Juan Carlos Osorio. Skipper Andres Guardado who was spared from a red card during the first half for a nasty tackle, saw the second yellow card on the 70th minute. Only a minute later, it was Godin who struck a header to get the equalizer for Uruguay. Both sides had ten players now, fifteen minutes from the final the match was about to live its most exciting moments.
Right at the tipping point for both sides when Mexico was pressing really high and the Uruguay side was on the verge of losing their nerves, Osorio took Chicharito out for Raul Jimenez. During a corner kick it was skipper Rafael Marquez the one who scored a massive screamer straight to Muslera's top corner, this goal gave Mexico three vital points that placed them as the first official Copa America title contenders. At the very end, Hector Miguel Herrera headed home again after an amazing individual play commanded by Irving Lozano on the left side of the field. Mexico's reaction at the toughest moment of the game is very valuable. With the top level of this match, we can now say that the Copa America Centenario has officially begun.
