UEFA has cancelled the highly anticipated Finalissima between Spain and Argentina after negotiations over the match venue failed to produce an agreement. The fixture, meant to feature the EURO 2024 champions against the Copa América 2024 winners, was initially planned for 27 March in Qatar, but the region’s geopolitical instability made hosting impossible.
UEFA expressed disappointment, praising Qatari authorities for their efforts despite the circumstances. Several alternatives were proposed, including staging the match at the Santiago Bernabéu with an equal fan split, adopting a two‑leg format, or selecting a neutral European venue. Argentina rejected each option and later suggested dates that Spain could not accommodate, ultimately insisting on 31 March, which proved unworkable. UEFA thanked Real Madrid, the Spanish federation and Qatari organisers for their cooperation during the last‑minute discussions. Both governing bodies regret the cancellation but remain committed to preserving the competition’s spirit in future editions.
