No Dani Alves? No problem because Sergi Roberto is here, the Catalan player has redefined his position as a central midfielder and earned his new revolutionized role as a right-back. This Saturday at Gijon against Sporting, he was involved in four out of the five goals in Barcelona's 5-0 victory. Neymar scored a brace, Luis Suarez opened the score, Rafinha and Arda completed the convincing victory which gets them a little bit closer to Real Madrid.
But the true star of the day was Sergi Roberto without question, he was a real headache for the Sporting Gijon defense on the right flank. When asked abou Sergi's performance and if he had secured a spot in the starting XI, Luis Enrique said: "It depends on the situation. Our flanks were good, but it can improve. I do not see him [playing just on the] right side for Barca. He can play inside or [as a] pivot. I love that he feels good at that position [though]."
Sergi also said: "Every game I'm feeling happier, both in attack and defense. I'm getting the opportunity to play, which is what I want, I'm really enjoying it. [I'm] very happy above all for the team. It was a very intense game from Sporting but in the end we were able to win the points. It was difficult to start with, they started very well. We couldn't play our usual game, they stopped up. But it really helped getting to half-time with two goals."
"We have many possibilities in the team. Depending on what we see, we utilize different players. It is interesting as a coach to have the options to change [who is on the] bench when needed. [We are] very happy for the victory. [To] play and win away from home is a dangerous [task] and more [so] against Sporting, who have great intensity. We were able to create chances to settle before the break and then in the second half we struggled to get into the game. They did not generate chances, but neither did they let us move. The result was misleading. It sounded simple, but it was not. Not at all."
