Cape Verde’s maiden World Cup campaign ended in the last sixteen, yet their impact on the 2026 tournament was undeniable. Bubista’s team quickly became one of the competition’s most captivating surprises, earning admiration for their discipline, resilience, and fearless approach on football’s biggest stage. Their debut began with a stunning goalless draw against Spain, a result that showcased organisation and composure against a heavyweight contender.

Cape Verde then remained unbeaten through the group phase, securing draws with Uruguay and Saudi Arabia to advance with growing confidence. Their momentum carried into the knockout rounds, where they delivered another inspired performance against defending champions Argentina. A 1‑1 draw forced extra time, and even after falling behind again, they battled back to level at 2‑2 before narrowly losing 3‑2.

Ironically, Spain and Argentina, Cape Verde’s toughest opponents, will now contest the final, underscoring how competitive the debutants truly were.
