To understand what Atletico Madrid means to Fernando Torres as a club, one has to understand a little bit of his back story with the Colchoneros. Raised as a full blown Atletico Madrid fan since birth, Fernando Torres arrived to the club at a early stage of his childhood and since then he has lived and suffered as a true Atletico Madrid fan in through the good and the bad moments. Ever since he made the jump to the first team, Fernando Torres swore to defend the colors of the Colchoneros, even if that meant that he would have make a sacrifice or two n the process.
Perhaps the biggest sacrifice he made came in 2007, after much speculation and the club in economic peril, Torres decided to help out and leave the club of his life in order to help them stay as a competitive side. After a long a successful career in England and mostly with the National team, Torres saw the opportunity to return to the club and he took it without hesitation. But things are different now for the Colchoneros, today they stand as one of the most competitive sides in all of Europe competing against Barcelona and Real Madrid head to head every year in La Liga.
One of the true Atletico legends, Uruguay striker Diego Forlan understands Torres's value to the institution and has agreed that Diego Simeone and Enrique Cerezo would make a huge mistake if they let a symbol like Torres leave the club. The Uruguayan spoke to Cadena Cope about Fernando and his impact as the main man for Atletico Madrid. Despite his age, Forlan is convinced that Torres still has a lot to give to the club he completely adores.
"It's very important for the people and he is a player who is performing, is physically well, is scoring goals. It is not a matter of renewing a player because he is from the club and has known it all of his life. In a team playing 60 games a year, he will play 35 or 40 and can help with goals or assists." About his absence against Barcelona this Wednesday, Forlan said: "It is an important loss, not only for the quality of the player, but due to the damage he has done to the club throughout his career. The sending off could have been avoided. He knows you have to be very careful in these kind of games."
"Barcelona missed Luis Suarez in the last La Liga match. When Neymar is more outside and [Lionel] Messi is away from the area, Luis is the one who stays and does the dirty work: creating space, annoying, fighting. He's a difficult player to defend against because he is very strong and is very dangerous. It is true they are not at their best, but they are a wounded lion. It's complicated when you have an opponent of this magnitude, with players as destabilizing."
