This Tuesday at Parc des Princes, the German national team won the top of their group as they defeated Northern Ireland 1-0. Despite not being able to score more than one goal they dominated without contest, there is no doubt that Germany can be widely considered as one of the tournament's most competitive sides so far. Their only problem is the lack of good aim in front of goal, they will have to work on that during the week in order to find the back of the net more often.
This Tuesday was the proof that they don't really have a problem in translating the ball with the same resolve and order that they have us all used to. As a way to fight that lack of goals, manager Joachim Low decided to use one of his only centre forwards on the attack to see if he would be able to get them to score. The usage of Mario Gomez on the attack brought Germany the depth they needed, but they still lacked more punch on the finish. There is no denying that the Germans are a title contender, but playing against a more defensive side will eventually be counter productive for them.
The only goal of the match for them came in the 30th minute of the first half, it was Mario Gomez himself who fed the ball to Muller, the Bayern forward returned the ball in Mario's favor with his back to goal. The centre-forward finished via a deflection and Germany took the lead which would eventually give them the three points and the top spot of their group. The rest of the match was filled with chances for Germany and a few counter attacks from the Irish, but nothing too substantial happened at the end.
