Marquez makes history in Columbus Ohio

Everybody was a bit nervous with what was about to go down in Columbus Ohio this Friday, Donald Trump's election as the United States new president turned a simple football match into a sports war between two countries. The players tried to calm things down with inclusive statements with the press but everybody knew that this was more than just a soccer game. At the start of the game, we could see a group picture including both national teams as a sign of unity in response to all the hate originated from the elections against Mexicans.

But as soon as the first whistle was sounded, gloves were completely off, both sides played with more intensity than usual in a United Stated against Mexico match. Let us not forget that in the last four World Cup Qualifiers played here, El Tri has lost 2-0 or 'Dos a Cero' like the Americans love reminding all Mexicans. But Mexico's good form throughout the qualifiers foretold a much different result for this Friday.

Early in the second half, Mexico sent the clear message that they wanted an early opener with a Tecatito gorgeous shot that hit the post. A few minutes later, it was a Miguel Layun weak but well-placed shot the one that made the difference. The Mexicans dominated the game throughout the first half, but they weren't able to finish off the USMNT while they could. Carlos Vela had it with a header that struck the bar before half-time, the Americans needed to wake up soon and they did after the break. The equalizer came during the second half through Wood, the USMNT dominated throughout most of the last 45 minutes of the game.

Then two minutes before the end, historic skipper Rafa Marquez made history in Columbus with a clinical header after a corner kick for Mexico. This was the first ever time El Tri won an official match in Columbus Ohio, this was it, Mexico was just a few minutes away from getting a positive result for the first time ever. Well-deserved for Mexico who practically secured their spot in the World Cup Qualifiers' final eight.
