Last Saturday while playing against Venezuela, Lionel Messi made history by reaching the 54 goals that striker Gabriel Batistuta had as a record for the Argentina national team. The Barcelona star was really happy with his achievement but he was more satisfied with the new victory which gave them the ticket to the Copa America Centenario semifinals where they will play against the USMNT.
After the game, Messi spoke to the press about the record he reached: "It's important for what it means to be the top scorer because it's Bati, but what makes me happier is the team, the result, because we made it to the semis. I liked the personality of the team and that we always go out to be the protagonists. The United States try to get close to you, to attack, they're a very difficult team. We have to do what we have been doing up until now. We are growing and that's the way we have to carry on."
Messi also recalled that this Argentina side deserves to win a trophy after reaching two consecutive finals in both the World Cup and the Copa America last year in Chile: "We don't give them the importance that we should because we didn't win, but it's not easy to reach two consecutive finals. What this team did has a lot of merit, although we all want to win. Now I hope we can reach a third final."
His manager, Gerardo Martino, talked about Messi's fantastic job against Venezuela and his record: "He has already matched the record, but I'd like to see Messi exceed it at this Copa America. Messi knows that he is dominating and that means the marking on him is rigid. But he understands that very well. We had many goal situation and were fair winners. With the third goal, the team moved the ball better and felt comfortable. The second half was very good. But now we need to focus on United State and trying not to give them any options."
