FC Barcelona are still right in the middle of the summer transfer window, their major concerns have apparently been covered in the defensive line with the arrivals of centre-back Samuel Umtiti and full-back Lucas Digne. But they still need to sign a forward who can cope with mostly having a more secondary role which is not very appealing to top class players, so far many of them have rejected Barcelona for that reason.
FC Barcelona still has €80 million to spend, but the problem lies in that forward dilemma. For club vice-president Jordi Mestre, talking about transfer in depth is something that general secretary Robert Fernandez and sporting director Albert Soler should be asked about. However, he spoke to Mundo Deportivo and revealed some details on what Barcelona is doing this summer.
"You have to talk to [technical secretary] Robert [Fernandez] and [sporting director] Albert Soler and it depends on the remaining money but I am optimistic. Until August 31 there is time to move pieces, both for incomings and outgoings. It is still early. Denis, Umtiti and Digne show that the work is done throughout the year and materializes to be finished. There are others [which] are not as fast. The work is brewing throughout the season."
About Belgian centre-back Thomas Vermaelen's situation, Mestre added: "He is central left, we also have [Jeremy] Mathieu and Umtiti there. And with other the central defenders, [Gerard] Pique and [Javier] Mascherano, we have both sides covered. [Right-back] I think is well covered. Aleix Vidal had to adapt in his first year. It is normal."
