This isn't the 90's anymore, nor the early 2000's when Germany used to have a large number of strikers who could be reliable at any given moment. Today, the German national team is suffering from a lack of players in that position, people like Mario Gomez or Miroslav Klose who had that responsibility of scoring the goals. Now things have changed drastically, the offensive players Germany has are more playmakers or wingers but there isn't a centre-forward who can be trusted.
Forward Thomas Muller who is a goal-scorer himself but not a natural striker, is aware of this problem and spoke to Bild about a solution: "Of course, we have few options in this central position. It's been known for some that this is a fundamental problem in Germany, because there's not a lot of choice."
"Mario Gotze has already done very well. But in the course of a game it would be nice if you could call on a beefier option. There's only Mario Gomez. In recent years it was that the footballing and technical elements were very much in mind. In positions where these properties are required, we have an oversupply. It was thought that we must go in the Spanish direction. One can see, however, that it is necessary to have the penalty area striker variant."
