Julian Nagelsmann has offered a sharp assessment of Nick Woltemade’s Premier League slump, suggesting Eddie Howe’s tactical approach is largely responsible for the forward’s barren run. Woltemade opened the season impressively but hasn’t scored in the league since December’s draw with Chelsea, despite earning a call‑up for Germany’s March friendlies.
Speaking to Kicker, Nagelsmann praised the 24‑year‑old’s character and attitude but argued that Newcastle’s constant striker rotation and deep defensive positioning have undermined his effectiveness. He noted that Woltemade is often deployed so far back he ends up defending “like a No. 6,” leaving him too distant from goal to pose a threat. The coach stressed that the striker is neither a counterattacking specialist nor a high‑speed runner, making such usage ill‑suited to his strengths.
Nagelsmann concluded that expectations of a 20‑goal season are unrealistic under these conditions and promised Germany will position him far closer to goal.
