There is no denying that the biggest flaw in football is the referee's inability to be perfect on every call they make, making mistakes is something that may not be normal but due to the imperfection of a human being, is something common today. During the last Copa America Centenario semifinal between Chile and Colombia, the referee sent off a Colombian player in the second half after a harsh call and didn't grant a clear penalty in their favor.
These decisions were regarded as controversial after the match by Colombia manager Jose Pekerman, who took his time in making accusatory claims against said referee. At the end, these calls were instrumental in Colombia's elimination and were the reason why they got eliminated from the semifinal and will play a match against the US for the third place of the competition.
Talking to the press after the defeat, Pekerman told the press this: "We have to remember that our bad start cost us two goals but throughout the game, there were many accidents and none of them favoured us. In that sense, I feel that [the referee] committed certain injustices."
The coach also took some responsibility for the elimination, they weren't able to respond to Chile's impressive first ten minutes: "After the mistakes we committed at the start, in the second when we tried to tie the game, there was a clear penalty that would have changed the outcome. That penalty was so clear, and [the referee] did not whistle. A little while later there was a sending off for a questionable foul. The referee lacked management and direction. He failed to understand the importance of the game, and he had a lot to do with what we saw at the end of it."
