Spezia lost to Monza 2-0

Patrick Ciurria, a former striker for Spezia, scored in the 21st minute, and Carlos Augusto completed the scoring in extra time. Spezia maintained its lead over Hellas Verona in 18th position, which will travel to fellow underdog Cremonese on Sunday. In its previous 15 games in all competitions, Spezia had only won one game, although it had drew four of its previous five.

Ciurria cut inside from the right and struck from 20 yards out into the bottom left corner midway through the first quarter. Ciurria began his professional career at Spezia and apologised to the quiet audience by waiving his arms instead of celebrating against his previous team. Prior to a decisive Monza counterattack that sealed the victory late in stoppage time, Spezia missed many decent chances. Carlos Augusto jumped onto a through-ball from José Machn and raised it above Bartomej Drgowski's head as he closed in.
