Goals from Trent Alexander-Arnold and Roberto Firmino helped Liverpool maintain their perfect start to the season with a battling 2-1 win over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. Alexander-Arnold’s sweet strike from a neatly worked free-kick gave Jurgen Klopp’s side the lead in west London.
Brazilian striker Firmino then doubled Liverpool’s advantage, rising well to head an Andy Robertson cross past Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga. Chelsea threatened to mount a comeback and halved their deficit with 20 minutes remaining when N’Golo Kante dribbled through Liverpool’s defence and beat Adrian.
By beating Chelsea, Liverpool became the first team in top-flight history to win their opening six matches of a season in two consecutive campaigns. The Reds have also now won 15 games in a row in all competitions, scoring 42 goals and conceding just 12 in the process. Klopp’s side finished one point behind champions Manchester City last term but will hope to go one better this time around and have made the perfect start.
