Staying true to his direct style in front of a microphone, new England boss Sam Allardyce reminded everyone how disappointing the national team was during the Euros where they got eliminated by Iceland. The coach said what everybody has been thinking and saying during this past month, practically all of England was hoping the Three Lions to come back home with the trophy in their hands because of the amazing roster they had. But Sam said it out loud.
Forst of all, Allardyce talked about Wayne Rooney's position with England. He thinks Jose Mourinho will determine that by playing him in the best position possible: “I don’t want to put myself out in the open just yet. It is far too early. It’s a decision that I’ll make once I’ve got my feet under the table. I still think Wayne Rooney has a massive place to play in the England side. I don’t think there is any doubt about that. I think Jose will determine that. Because if Jose says he is not going to play him in center midfield and he is playing up front and scoring goals for Manchester United then it would be pointless me bringing him into England and playing him in centre-midfield.”
Then he fired at Hodgson when asked if he believes England should've won the trophy: “Yes, I do. I think they [could have done] had they all performed to their best, which they suggested they were going to beforehand. I was extremely excited by the performances that came before they actually got to the tournament. I thought there was some outstanding ability in the team to beat teams. Plenty of goals in the team.
“Maybe we looked at times suspect defensively but we seemed to be able to score one more goal than the opposition. Unfortunately, that all seem to dry up in the tournament. I would hope they use the disappointment in a positive manner and say to themselves: ‘I am a professional footballer and I’m not going to allow that to happen to me again’. They should use that bitter disappointment as a motivator, gain from the experience and make sure it doesn’t happen again.
"It could be held in a very positive way in the end. Feeling or experiencing disappointment should make you better in the end. When I got sacked from Blackpool and I didn’t deserve it, it didn’t scar me. It made me better. I knew I was going to be better for the experience and would move forward. You use the experience.”
