The news of Mats Hummels broke early this past Tuesday, the Borussia Dortmund fans already saw it coming as the player himself revealed that he wanted to move back to his old club. Playing for Dortmund, Hummels became one of the world's best centre backs and won some important trophies for the club. But not only that, Hummels also became one of the club's most beloved players as he was named the team's skipper. But today, all that love may turn into the worst kind of hate any football fan can have for anyone.
Former Borussia Dortmund defender Christoph Metzelder, has sent a message to Hummels and asked him to have patience with all the trolling and hating that's coming his way. Even in the Pokal final against his new club, the fans won't ever leave him alone for betraying them. To his arrival, one could say that only Marco Reus remains of that amazing generation of players that played the Champions League final against Bayern and lost it back in 2013.
Talking to Sport Bild, Metzelder explained the situation: "He has family roots in Munich. He has the chance to win a lot of titles at Bayern, including the Champions League. I can understand that. As a player you always feel unfairly treated because it is believed that there are rational and understandable explanations. But the fans' point of view is just a sum total of emotions. So you can understand why the fans are upset when the captain goes back to a big rival. I've experienced it myself after my move to Schalke. Mats can and must endure it."
Metzelder also explains why they decided to sign a player like Hummels: "It's an effect of facing Atletico Madrid this season, although even against Juventus they had too great a loss of quality in the defence due to injury. Boateng and Hummels in one side - that would be impressive, the best defense in Europe. Jerome has evolved under Pep Guardiola. He is perhaps the more complete of the two, because he's better in the defensive battles and has the speed. Mats, by contrast, is an incredible strategist who has huge self-confidence, and is perhaps the best at playmaking."
