Ronaldo cleared for Portugal’s World Cup opener

Cristiano Ronaldo will be free to play Portugal’s opening match at the 2026 World Cup after FIFA reduced his suspension to a single game, overturning fears he might miss the start of the tournament. The forward was sent off for violent conduct against Ireland in November 2025 after elbowing Dara O’Shea during a 2‑0 defeat. Under normal circumstances, the red card would have ruled him out of the final European qualifier against Armenia and Portugal’s first two World Cup fixtures. However, FIFA considered that it was his first dismissal in 225 international appearances and opted to cut the ban, placing him under a one‑year probation instead.

Having already served the suspension by missing the Armenia match, Ronaldo is eligible for all group games. Portugal, drawn with DR Congo, Uzbekistan and Colombia in Group K, will open their campaign on 17 June, with the Al Nassr striker available for selection.
